I never celebrated Halloween until I had kids! Earlier it’s almost like I never found a good enough reason to dress up and go out in the nail-biting, teeth chattering cold. Now I have two of them!! And weather has been kind on us too until now. Until few years back, I didn’t even know why Halloween was celebrated. ( I know! Shame on me!) and now that I know, I am thankful that my kids aren’t old enough to ask me about it. And when they do, I am totally going to make up some fancy dress competition story. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong. I do love all aspects of Halloween, the dressing up, trick or treating and having fun as a family. It’s just the explanation of why it’s celebrated that makes me pretend that I didn’t hear the question.
This Halloween, breaking my usual boring stand of not dressing up, (I go around saying dressing up is for kids and teens) I will also be doing a little something to my appearance. It’s not much but it’s a start. We are trying to convince the man of the house to chill and dress up too. Fingers crossed. Another new tradition was these spooky spider cookies that I made. My 4-year-old who hates spiders had a lot of fun helping me out but now he doesn’t want to eat them. 🙂 There was so much buzz in the household while making them that I would highly recommend making them with your kids.
I love NanKhatai. They are the perfect cookies for this project. They don’t spread a whole lot and therefore, the dome shape can be easily achieved with them. I flattened them a bit but they would have looked nicer without flattening. They are eggless and nut free so you can easily take them to Halloween parties. And their light color is perfect to make the spiders stand out. These cookies can be made with ghee or shortening. I have tried them with both and liked both quite a lot, though, my preference would be ghee. I have used these eye candies- (Wilton Candy Eyeballs,0.88 oz,Count of 56) So what are you waiting for? Get started now! Happy and Spooky Halloween to you and your family!!

I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but I still have no idea about the reasons for celebrating Halloween, and after reading this post, I am not sure I want to find out.
I like the fancy dress theory; might stick to that one. 😀
