Healthy food and healthy drinks are not just the ‘in-thing’ these days but also the absolute necessity of our times. It is not a surprise then that Green tea tops that list of healthy drinks. Its benefits are immense and noteworthy. Those of us who love green tea for its goodness, know what all amazing things it does like the back of our hand. That it’s loaded with antioxidants, supports weight loss, protects against certain cancers, tooth decay, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol, high blood pressure……..ya let’s just say this stuff is good for us. So much pressure on poor green tea, I tell you, for having to be a five-star performer all the time.
But what most people don’t realize is that when you dip that tea bag (or loose tea leaves, for that matter) into that cup of hot water and then throw away the tea bag after a few minutes, you only get a fraction of its benefits. That’s where matcha tea comes into picture. Matcha means ‘powdered tea’. When you drink matcha, you ingest the entire leaf unlike the regular green tea and that is why it’s no wonder that matcha tea has 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea or that 1 cup of matcha is equal to 10 cups of regular green tea in terms of its nutritional value. That’s powerful!!
After reading all this, I did not need much convincing to order myself some matcha powder. (But, Oh my stars! This stuff is more expensive than GOLD!) Most health food stores have it including amazon. I was prepared for it to taste a bit bitter but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t. Considering (in my limited experience) most healthy beverages have crappy taste, I actually loved the taste of it. Frothy and foamy matcha latte was a unique and satisfying experience for me, probably more so because I knew I was drinking the ‘elixir’ of life in the truest of sense.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tsp ceremonial or premium grade Matcha powder
- 2 cups Milk
- 1 1/2 tbsp. - 2 tbsp. granulated Sugar
- 2 tbsp. hot Water
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix matcha and hot water and whisk thoroughly until matcha dissolves completely.
- In a pan, heat milk until steaming hot. Turn off the stove and using a wire whisk, foam up the milk.
- Using the spoon to hold back the foam, pour the milk into matcha mixture.
- Pour the mixture into 2 cups and then add froth (using a spoon) into both cups.
- Sprinkle some matcha on top and enjoy it hot.
Notes
If you are drinking matcha for the first time, do not drink it on empty stomach. It is too potent and can upset stomach.
