What coffee is to America, tea is to India. We are a tea obsessed nation. We need tea for all occasions and no occasions. Headache – “Gotta have” tea.
No headache – “Just like that” tea.
If you have guests over -“What will u have?” tea.
Happy occasion -“Let’s celebrate” tea.
Sad occasion -“Need to uplift my mood” tea.
Rainy season – “What will I have with my pakoras/fritters?” tea. Making Samosas and Poha – “What’s Tom without Jerry?” tea.
Winter season – “Warm me up” tea.
Summer season – “Am addicted by now” 🙁 tea.
I never had tea before marriage. After marriage, I discovered my husband had a huge crush on tea. I tried with all my might to steer him away from tea by reciting all the cons (few real and more made up) of tea, believe me I did but as they say “true love always wins in the end”, his love for tea won and she strengthened her position in our household permanently. I ended up converting into a happy tea drinker. Of course its all his fault and what a delicious and refreshing fault it is. 🙂
Summers are going on in full swing and as much as I love my hot cup of tea, my soul ( 🙄 too dramatic, I know) yearns for something cooler in the late afternoons. So guess what did I think of? yes, you are right-“I’ll figure a way out to have you” TEA. 🙂 This is an incredibly easy and delicious beverage to make when you want to have tea but do not want to have hot tea in a hot weather. Having said that, it tastes awesome even hot. In fact, it will take lot of restraint to cool it down and prepare the cooler version. It is so refreshing and different that it will leave you wanting for more.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 7 peppercorns
- 1 tbsp. grated ginger
- 2 tsp. loose tea leaves
- 1 inch cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. cardamom powder
- 2 holy basil leaves
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1 cup vanilla ice cream
- 3 tbsp. sweetened whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
- Warm milk in a pan and add ginger, tea leaves, peppercorns, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom powder and holy basil leaves.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Cool to room temperature.
- Chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Use a sieve to strain the liquid.
- Add ice cream and blend in a blender.
- Top with sweetened whipped cream and serve chilled.
Notes
1. Use regular unflavored black tea leaves. 2. You can add ice cubes to the tea instead of chilling it in the fridge to speed up the cooling process, although it will dilute the bold flavors of the tea. 3. Instead of whipped cream, vanilla ice cream can be added too. 4. I have not included the chilling time in the total time taken to make this beverage.
